Very Lane Eum

25 09 2007

I wanted to blog about this story, not least because I thought my title was inspired (and a lolly-pop to anyone that understands it)..!

“Two historic market towns and a village have ambushed Britain’s biggest cities by pushing them into lowly positions on a new version of the Monopoly board. St Albans, Colchester and Keele triumphed in an online poll to name the squares in the game.”

Undoubtedly a clever PR stunt (well, what else were you going to do with a game that was launched in 1935?) but it seems that the competition got quite spicy with rival towns’ mayors taking part in radio duels and a Liverpool council spokesman (poor Liverpool, again!) cattily saying, “I suppose you can spend a lot of time on this sort of thing in a place where nothing much else is going on. This gameboard doesn’t reflect real life. Liverpool is fast becoming the Park Lane of the north and the makers should pick up a Go to Jail card for getting it so wrong.”
